Plan for Development of Nishi-Nagoya Thermal Power Station Group No. 7

Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. has today decided on a plan for the refurbishment of the Nishi-Nagoya Thermal Power Station, which will see the decommissioning of Units No. 1-4 and the construction at the station of an LNG-fired combined cycle facility with the world's highest level of efficiency. The Tobishima-mura and Aichi Prefecture authorities have been notified of the plan.

Under the new plan, the existing Units No. 1-4 (total output: 1,190 MW) will be decommissioned and dismantled, the previously decommissioned Units No. 5 and 6 will be dismantled, and a new 2,200 MW-class facility (Group No. 7) will be constructed, looking towards the commencement of operation in FY2019.

This replacement of a station that has been in operation for approximately 40 years with a high-efficiency facility can be expected to reduce CO2 emissions and the amount of fuel used by increasing the overall thermal efficiency of Chubu Electric's thermal power stations.

    • How Combined Cycle Generation Works

    Fuel (natural gas) is combusted, and the energy from the combusted gas rotates a gas turbine. Heat from the high-temperature exhaust gas discharged from the gas turbine is effectively recovered by a waste heat recovery boiler. This heat is used to generate high-temperature, high-pressure steam, which rotates a steam turbine.

    The combined force generated by the gas and steam turbine is used to rotate a generator. This efficient mechanism of power generation is termed combined cycle generation.
