On Submission of Safety Evaluation Action Plan Concerning Impacts of Seismic Motion and Tsunami on Nuclear Power Facilities in Light of Knowledge of the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake, Etc.

November 18, 2011
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

This is to announce that, following a directive of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency*1 that was issued in light of knowledge of the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake, etc., Chubu Electric Power today submitted a safety evaluation action plan to the same agency concerning the impacts of seismic motion and tsunami on the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station.

In keeping with the directive, Chubu Electric Power will evaluate tsunami and earthquakes and, as we have done heretofore, endeavor to collect information about tsunami and earthquakes and appropriately reflect new knowledge in future evaluations.

1. Content of Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency directive

(1) Perform appropriate tsunami analysis over a wider anticipated wave source zone, referring to the Central Disaster Prevention Council's study and the Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion's long-term evaluation of ocean trench earthquakes, as well as appropriate tsunami evaluation that accounts for wave source time lags and the superimposition of long-cycle and short-cycle waves.

(2) Perform appropriate earthquake analysis over a wider anticipated wave source zone, referring to the Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion's long-term evaluation of ocean trench earthquakes.

(3) Establish an action plan for the above evaluation and submit by November 18, 2011.

(4) Periodically report implementation status at least once every two months, and report on evaluations as soon as reports are compiled.

2. Action plan

Action plan

*1 Directive of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency: "On Performance of Safety Evaluations Concerning Impacts of Seismic Motion and Tsunami on Nuclear Power Facilities in Light of Knowledge of the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake, Etc. (Directive)" (Nov. 2, 2011, NISA No. 4), issued by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency on November 11, 2011.

*2 We plan to report our implementation status on the following at least once every two months. We plan to appropriately reflect the study of a long-term evaluation of earthquakes in the Nankai Trough, which the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion plans for spring 2012, and the study by the Cabinet Office's Central Disaster Prevention Council, which will reflect the Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion study. This process is subject to change depending on such factors as progress of the evaluation.
