June 27, 2013
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. today commenced work for the installation of filter vent equipment* in Unit 3 at Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station as part of Severe Accident Countermeasures.

Chubu Electric Power decided to implement Severe Accident Countermeasures based on the Technical Knowledge about the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accidents (Summary) published in March 2012 by the then-Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. (Reported December 20, 2012)

Following preparations including deliberation over detailed designs and construction plans, work on the installation of the filter vent equipment was commenced today.

We will steadily proceed with the construction work, looking towards its completion at the end of FY2014.

Chubu Electric Power will engage all its resources in the sure and steady effort to further enhance the safety of Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station. We are also committed to providing detailed explanations of the substance of those efforts in order to contribute to the peace of mind of local residents and society at large.

* The purpose of filter vent equipment is to vent gases from reactor containment vessels through filters in the event of an excessive buildup of pressure within the vessel following damage to the reactor core. This depressurizes the vessel and prevents damage, in addition to reducing the amount of radioactive particulates (cesium, etc.) released to the atmosphere and preventing long-term soil contamination.
