Concerning the results of tsunami deposit study on premises and in vicinity of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station

In light of the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake of March 11, 2011 and trends at the national government level, Chubu Electric Power conducted a tsunami deposit study since August 2012, to confirm details about tsunami occurring in the past on the premises and in the vicinity of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station. The results of this study have now been compiled and we are announcing them here.

(Summary of results from the study)
The study was conducted on the premises of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station (both west and east sides) and in the Osa, Niino, and Kiku river basins. In parts of the power station premises and the Kiku River basin, the results confirmed event deposits* between about 0 - 8 m and between about 3 - less than 4 m above the sea level that existed at the time of deposit. No event deposits were found at other study sites.
The study of tsunami deposits did not result in any findings suggesting any giant tsunami larger than those indicated in historical records, such as tsunami caused by the Ansei-Tokai earthquake and Hoei earthquake.
In addition, the study results largely agree with past tsunami deposit study results for the Enshu Sea coast, which also found no traces of giant tsunami.
Chubu Electric Power will endeavor to further enhance reliability by reflecting the latest knowledge.
*Deposits that may have been caused by tsunami, but may also have been caused by non-tsunami factors such as storm surges, flooding, or debris flows
