Regarding the International Contributions Utilizing Decommissioned Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Unit 1

November 26, 2014
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Units 1 and 2 terminated operations in January, 2009, and subsequently moved to the decommissioning stage starting in November of the same year.

(Reported November 18, 2009)

This marks the first decommissioning for a domestic commercial light water reactor. While safely performing the decommissioning, Chubu Electric Power is deliberating on studies in order to contribute to the decommissioning of nuclear power plants in Japan and overseas in the future, as well as the improvement of nuclear power plant safety technology.

On this occasion, as a method of study that can be carried out at the decommissioned plant, we have decided to collect a part of the structure of the reactor body from Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 and conduct research on the change in material properties and the radioactivity status of the structure due to reactor operation.

As initiatives like this are rare not only in Japan but around the world as well, we decided to carry out the material properties investigation together through participation with the international projects of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and carry out the radioactivity status study collectively with the U.S. Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

1 Participation in IAEA International Projects (Approximately 4 years)

As the decommissioning of nuclear power plants are conducted at various countries around the world, IAEA started preparations to launch an international project to assess the soundness of reactor materials utilizing a decommissioned nuclear power plant.

We will continue to contribute to the improvement of nuclear power safety technology by participating in the international projects planned by the IAEA, while advancing studies for assessing the characteristics of materials actually used, by collecting a portion of the structure from the reactor pressure vessels and containment vessels, etc., of Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Unit 1.

2 Collective study with the EPRI (Approximately 3 years)

By conducting studies to improve the accuracy of assessment methods of radiation distribution and gain an understanding of the actual conditions of the radiation distribution within the reactor pressure vessel, which is difficult to confirm during operation, we will utilize this study for dismantling work and dismantling waste treatment and disposal plans, etc., for Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Units 1 and 2.

By conducting these initiatives collectively with the EPRI, which has a wealth of knowledge related to decommissioning overseas and sharing the results with relevant parties, we will continue to contribute to the decommissioning of nuclear power plants in Japan and overseas.

Chubu Electric Power will continue to perform international contributions utilizing decommissioned plants and contribute to the future development of nuclear technology.
