The Japanese government approves "Rice Husk Power Project in Thailand," in which Chubu Electric Power is participating, as a CDM project.
June 29, 2004
On May 25, 2004, Chubu Electric Power applied with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for the Japanese government's approval of the "ATB Rice Husk Power Project in Pichit Province, Thailand," which we are currently developing, as a CDM project. On June 29, 2004, we received this approval from the Japanese government. This is the eighth project approved as a CDM/JI project by the Japanese government.
This project involves the construction of a small power plant with an output of 20,000 kW in a grain-producing region in the northern part of Thailand. It will be one of the largest power stations to use rice husks as fuel.
This project will enable the effective use of rice husks, which are normally disposed of or burned, as power-plant fuel. It will contribute to the reduction of fossil fuel consumption in other thermal power plants. The operation of this power plant (scheduled to begin in December 2005) is expected to generate 84,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission-reduction credits annually.
Emission-reduction credit calculation methodology for this project has already been approved by the Executive Board of the United Nations' Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). We plan to obtain approval from the Thai government as well as other necessary approvals to ensure its certification as a CDM project.
