September 13, 2004
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

In response to the pipe rupture in the secondary system of Reactor No. 3 at the Mihama Power Plant of the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., Chubu Electric Power was ordered by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency to report on inspections of pipes that may be affected by the pipe-thinning phenomenon at thermal power plants.

On August 18, we submitted a report on our investigation to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. Today, we submitted a report on our plans to inspect units that have now been in operation for over 20 years.

An overview of the report is given below.

Report overview

We reported on future plans to inspect target sections and measures to ensure employee safety until the inspections are concluded. These inspections excluded sections in which integrity was confirmed. The integrity confirmation was based on "Guidance on Thinning Control of Pipes in Secondary System in Nuclear Facilities (PWR)," and was conducted by (1) remaining-life assessments and (2) inspections of representative sections (sections already inspected).
