Results of Voluntary Inspections of Pipe Wall Thickness (Interim Report) and Repairs at Thermal Power Plants

November 1, 2004
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

Based on inspection plans submitted to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, we are performing thorough inspections of pipe wall thickness at our thermal power plants.

We have currently finished inspecting/evaluating around half the number of units that entered service more than 20 years ago. Several pipe sections were found to have fallen short of the minimum wall thickness, and these have been repaired.

A summary follows:

1. Results of inspection and evaluation of units in use for over 20 years (to be completed within three months)

To date, we have finished inspecting and evaluating 9 (746 sections) of 22 units (1,387 sections in total).

Pipe sections at the following sites were found not to meet the minimum wall thickness: Taketoyo No. 3 (1 section), Yokkaichi No.3 (2 sections), and Chita No.3 (1 section).

We verified that the remaining sections were in good condition.

2. Results of inspecting and evaluating units used for less than 20 years (to be completed within six months)

So far, we have finished inspections and evaluations at 7 (487 sections) of 39 units (1,903 sections in total).

We found pipe sections that did not have the minimum wall thickness at the following units: Kawagoe No. 3-2 (2 sections) and No. 3-6 (2 sections).

We verified that the remaining sections were in good condition.

3. Repairs of thinned pipe sections

Of the sections mentioned above lacking adequate thickness, we have already repaired the following: Taketoyo No. 3 (1 section), Yokkaichi No.3 (2 sections), Kawagoe No. 3-2 (2 sections), and No. 3-6 (2 sections).

Repairs of the Chita No.3 (1 section), not currently in use, are scheduled for December.
