As part of periodic inspections of Reactors Nos. 1 and 2 at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant, construction is currently underway to replace the reactor core shrouds and to improve their seismic safety margins.
At present, as part of a construction projected intended to improve reactor seismic safety margins, assessment and redesign is proceeding based on target earthquake ground motions (bedrock ground acceleration of approximately 1000 gal from an earthquake). However, since the construction for Reactors Nos. 1 and 2 is on a larger scale than for Reactors Nos. 3 - 5, and since replacement of the exhaust pipes shared by Reactors Nos. 1 and 2 will require redesigns of exterior facilities, the start of construction is expected to be delayed.
For this reason, the period of suspended operations for Reactors Nos. 1 and 2, originally planned to end after March 2008, has been extended through March 2011.
