Report on engineering assessment and other matters regarding the age of Reactor No.1 at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station
January 31, 2006
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.
Since Reactor No. 1 at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station (which began operating March 17, 1976) will mark its 30th year of operation in March 2006, Chubu Electric Power has planned countermeasures for dealing with the age of the facility, based on regulations governing the installation, operation, and other matters related to nuclear reactors used for power generation.
Today, Chubu Electric Power compiled and submitted to the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry a report on the engineering assessment and long-term maintenance plans for the reactor, in light of its age.
In the age-related engineering assessment of the reactor, the long-term integrity of the reactor's equipment and structure were confirmed based on an assumed working life of 60 years for the nuclear power station. The assessment also confirmed the earthquake resistance of the reactor.
As a result of this assessment, it has been confirmed that the integrity of most of the reactor's equipment and structure can be maintained by continuing the maintenance activities currently in place.
For some of the reactor's equipment, measures such as additional inspections have been chosen for the purpose of further enhancing maintenance activities, which have been included in the long-term maintenance plan. This plan will be reflected in future maintenance activities.
The report submitted today will be inspected by the Japanese government.
