Press Release Back Number(2006)

Start of adjustment operations at reactor no. 5 at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station

March 15, 2006
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

The first periodic inspection of reactor no. 5 at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station (an advanced boiling water reactor with output rated at 1.38 million kilowatts) began on January 16, 2006. The inspection included checking of various elements of the reactor machinery.

Plans call for starting up the reactor and beginning adjustment operations today, following completion of the inspection of various elements of reactor machinery, the periodic inspection, and a periodic inspection by operators (all conducted while the reactor is shut down), and following preparations for startup.

Adjustment operations involve inspection and testing of the reactor facilities using steam generated in the reactor, conducted by gradually increasing the reactor's output. Following completion of these tests and inspections, a final total load-performance inspection will be conducted by the Japanese government, as the final inspection.

In the event of any mechanical problems arising during adjustment operations (i.e., those related to operations and not affecting continuous safe operation), the reactor may be shut down for repairs, as part of the inspection operations carried out during adjustment operations.
