Construction to improve seismic resistance of Reactor No. 4 at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station

March 22, 2006
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

The Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station is voluntarily undertaking construction to increase the seismic resistance of each of its reactors. Personnel are proceeding with assessment of seismic resistance to a shock in the target area (a seismic tremor of approximately 1,000 gal at bedrock) and preparation of designs to increase the seismic resistance. These efforts were announced on January 28, 2005.

These plans involve assessment of the seismic resistance of Reactor No. 4; the relevant construction, including work currently underway, includes the following activities.

In the ninth periodic inspection, planned to commence on March 23, construction will begin to improve structures supporting piping and electrical circuitry. In addition, plans call for improvements to exhaust-pipe facilities, beginning in April.

All construction is planned for completion in the second half of the 2007 fiscal year.
