Sale of New Coal Ash-Based Planting Soil for Lawns

September 22, 2005
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

In partnership with Applied Natural Products Co., Ltd. (President: Joichi Hotta; Address: Nishiki, Naka-ku, Nagoya), we have developed the "Shiba-no-tsuchi" product, a planting soil for lawns. Sales of the new product will begin in late September.

To make more effective use of coal ash (specifically, clinker ash *), a by-product of coal-based thermal power generation, we have developed and began selling several planting soil products: "Hanameguri Culture Soil," for general plant growth (April 2002); "Hanameguri Culture Soil for Flowers" (March 2003); and "Hanameguri Culture Soil for Vegetables and Herbs" (April, 2004).

* This is a type of coal ash generated by coal combustion in a boiler. With its porous structure of bonded particles, clinker ash has outstanding air permeability in addition to satisfying the three conditions for optimal soil: water retention, drainage, and nutrient retention.

These products are now available at gardening and DIY shops and shopping centers not only in Tokai but also in the Kanto and Kansai regions.

By mixing more clinker ash than was included in existing products, we developed the ideal planting soil for lawns, one that allows roots to penetrate deeper and offers lower specific gravity relative to competing products. Furthermore, Shiba-no-tsuchi does not harden even when walked on repeatedly.

With the addition of this new product, our Hanameguri series now covers an even wider range of uses, from home gardening to lawn growth.

We hope that the development and sale of these planting soil products will promote further recycling of coal ash and, in the process, contribute to the establishment of a recycling-oriented society.
