Concerning Plan for Using Plutonium Recovered at Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant (FY2007)
February 23, 2007
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.
Each year, Chubu Electric establishes a plan to use recovered plutonium (recovered from Chubu Electric's spent nuclear fuel) from Japan Nuclear Fuel Co., Ltd.'s Rokkasho reprocessing plant. In order to ensure transparency, each year we announce our usage plan prior to actual recovery*. Our plan for FY2007 is as announced in the attachment.
Furthermore, active testing using spent fuel began at the Rokkasho reprocessing plant in March 2006, followed in November of that year with the start of recovery of uranium / plutonium mixed oxide (MOX) powder.
*"Japan's Basic Principles for the Use of Plutonium" (determined by the Atomic Energy Commission on August 5, 2003) require that Japanese electric power companies announce plans for use of plutonium recovered at the Rokkasho reprocessing plant.
