Chubu Electric Starts Using Portable Terminals as Part of General Support System for Power Distribution

March 29, 2007
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

Chubu Electric has developed portable terminals that allow our personnel to search for equipment information and customer contract information and register design details while out of the office. These terminals, which tie in to our Power Distribution General Support System*, will be used during the design of new equipment, including utility poles and power lines. Usage will begin company-wide on April 2, 2007.

*A system offering all-in-one management of tasks related to power distribution, i.e. the sending of power from power lines on utility poles, etc. to our customers' homes. A computer-generated map shows all pertinent information, from design details when installing new utility poles and power lines to an overview of power line networks. The system supports equipment layout planning, day-to-day maintenance and related tasks in general. (This system went company-wide in October 2004. For details of the development and implementation of this system, see the press releases from March 27, 2002 and May 9, 2003.)

Until now, to perform such tasks one had to search out information from the system in the office and print out design blueprints in advance, use these to perform actual design at the work site, and then enter design details to the system after returning to the office. Under the new arrangement, design is less labor-intensive and more efficient, and customer response is improved, as described below.

  1. (1) There is no need for overlapping tasks, such as onsite design followed by entry to system after returning to the office
  2. (2) There is no need to make extra trips to the worksite because of insufficient prior preparation or lack of checking the work onsite
  3. (3) Chubu Electric personnel can respond quickly and accurately to customer inquiries while onsite

In addition, the new terminals are in constant communication with Chubu Electric's server as they are being used, but many types of information, including personal information, are not stored on the terminals, thus minimizing the risk of information leaks.
