Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.
Chubu Electric is taking part in the Ras Laffan Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP) in Qatar, building natural gas combined cycle power generation and salt water desalination facilities.
On May 27, a portion of the facilities went into operation.
The project includes building and operating a plant in the Ras Laffan industrial zone 80km north of the capital Doha. The plant will have a power generating capacity of 1.025 million kW of power and produce 273,000 tons of fresh water per day.
The May 27 kickoff affected part of the power generating facility, which now has an output of 180,000kW that will increase to 600,000kW in the month of June. All facilities will be complete and in operation in 2008.
Qatar has enjoyed a strong economy in recent years, effecting large-scale development of resources like liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fast-paced construction of new infrastructure (new airport, harbor facilities and roads, etc.). In the meantime, demand for electric power and water has expanded rapidly. The electric power and water produced by this project will help Qatar keep up with the growing demand, particularly from Doha.
Chubu Electric maintains a friendly relationship with the nation of Qatar in our purchases of LNG, and it is our hope to bring this relationship to a higher level with the new project.
