Press Release Back Number(2006)

Car navigation system with utility pole detection technology

July 27, 2006
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

Chubu Electric Power has started using car navigation systems that include the locations of utility poles to allow us to quickly arrive on the scene when doing power line restoration work following disasters like typhoons and earthquakes. The systems will be installed on 458 of our vehicles used for power line restorations (high voltage electric vehicles, overhead work vehicles, restoration construction vehicles, etc.)

These car navigation systems will include positions for all of the nearly 3 million utility poles (including underground line facilities) in our coverage area. By simply entering the control number of each pole (for example: 51-A-65-Ma), the system automatically and effortlessly guides the user to the target pole.

Previously, we used maps containing pole locations to learn how to get to sites for restoration work, but this sometimes interfered with our ability to service areas quickly that were not clearly covered by maps.

Especially in the case of disasters, restoration work is often done with other offices and branch areas, but restoration sites can be easily reached using these car navigations systems without relying on local informants.

Chubu Electric Power using these systems for even faster response to disaster restorations will allow us to even further improve our customer service.
