Development and Sales of High Efficiency Heat Pump Warm Water Floor Heating System
Outstanding energy conservation even in areas as cold as -20°C

July 24, 2007
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

Chubu Electric, in collaboration with Daikin Industries, Ltd. (President: Yukiyoshi Okano; Address: 2-4-12, Nakazakinishi, Kita-ku, Osaka), has developed a high efficiency heat pump warm water floor heating system offering industry-leading energy efficiency and is functional even in cold areas where the temperature outdoors can fall as low as -20°C.

The newly developed system is the successor to the already marketed Hot Eco-Floor floor heating system. It brings two new models to the lineup. Daikin Industries will launch sales November 16.

Floor heating can provide an ideal indoor environment, warming the feet but keeping things cool up higher. Such systems are very popular in households, and since customers use them for a long time in such places as living rooms, running costs must be kept low. Because heat pumps draw heat from the air, low efficiency electric heaters are sometimes used in cold environments as a supplemental heat source.

The new system features a high efficiency motor and a newly developed compressor that greatly reduces compression loss. The heat exchanger's dimpled heat transfer surface is designed to increase heat exchange efficiency, further helping to achieve industry-leading efficiency. In addition, output from the compressor is increased to secure sufficient heating capacity even when the outside temperature is low. Targeted at homes meeting next-generation energy conservation standards, these innovations have made it possible to achieve high efficiency floor heating with a heat pump alone, even in such cold regions as Nagano Prefecture or northern Gifu Prefecture.

The newly developed system, allowing customers to enjoy both energy and cost savings with their floor heating, will further promote the all-electric home and offer a higher level of efficiency.

1 Major features of newly developed system

(1) Industry-leading energy conservation

Running a high efficiency heat pump with a COP*1 of 4.4 cuts running costs by one-third as compared to gas warm water floor heaters (results based on Chubu Electric tests).

(2) High efficiency floor heating even in cold climates

High efficiency floor heating with a heat pump alone is now possible even when the outside air temperature is -20°C.

*1 COP: A value found by dividing heating capacity by energy consumption. The higher the value, the greater the energy efficiency.
