2.5 kW IH Heating Inverter DevelopedFor Use in Commercial Cooking Systems

September 19, 2007
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

Chubu Electric and Toshiba Consumer Marketing Corporation have jointly developed the new 2.5 kW IH Heating Inverter(*1) for commercial cooking operations. Toshiba Consumer Marketing will commence sales in October.

Previous applications of IH heating for commercial cooking operations have used an electrical system to transmit signals between the control panel and inverter and thereby control operations. An electrically based signaling system, however, is easily affected by coil noise(*2), necessitating a high degree of wiring expertise to prevent erroneous signal transmissions. Thus there has been a need for inverter technology that allows transmissions of signals easily and without error.

The newly developed inverter uses optically based signal transmission between the control panel and inverter so that the two are electrically isolated from each other. As a result, there is no longer a need for such delicate power line wiring, and inverter performance is more reliable. Therefore we have developed the industry's first 2.5 kW IH heating inverter that can be purchased as an individual unit and is useful for general-purpose applications. Major characteristics are as below.

(1) High reliability

The use of optically based signal transmission between the control panel and inverter eliminates noise interference and realizes highly reliable commercial cooking with IH technology!

(2) General-purpose usefulness

The availability of the inverter as a stand-alone product enables usage in a wide range of commercial cooking applications!

Visitors to Technofair 2007, hosted by our Technology Development Department and taking place October 17-18, can see a demonstration of a handmade ebisen (shrimp cracker) baking system using the newly developed product.

(*1)
Inverter: An electrical power system that converts 60 Hz AC power into high frequency power of 10 kHz - 100 kHz. Such systems are used in IH cooking heaters. The magnetic field resulting from sending an electric current through an IH coil can heat metal even though the metal and IH coil are not in physical contact.

(*2)
Coil noise: Interference with electrical signals when a magnetic field from a coil causes voltage fluctuation in power lines.
