Japan Post Holdings, Co,. Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Hiroya Masuda), Japan Post, Co., Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Kazuhide Kinugawa), and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Nagoya-shi, Aichi, President & Director: Kingo Hayashi) today signed an agreement of strategic cooperation to jointly promote efforts to realize carbon neutrality.

In line with its mission and its social responsibilities, the Japan Post Holdings Group is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% compared to FY2019 by FY2030, leveraging its network of around 24,000 post offices, in order to achieve carbon neutrality in FY2050. At the same time, it also seeks to contribute to the carbon neutrality of the local communities.

Chubu Electric Power Group has pledged to the 2050 Zero Emission Challenge, aiming to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions for the business as a whole by 2050. Together with our customers and society at large, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality as well as safety, stability, and efficiency in delivering electricity to customers through energy infrastructure reform.

Both groups will contribute to carbon neutrality in Japan and to increasing the resilience of local communities against disasters through the following initiatives, leveraging the groups’ combined management resources and know-how.

  • Deploy charging stations to expand the use of electric vehicles for post collection
  • Introduce renewable power sources such as solar power generation at post offices
  • Optimize the energy use at post offices by installing storage batteries
  • Contribute to building a local community that is resilient against disasters using solar power generation facilities and storage batteries etc.

Based on this Agreement, we will install solar power generation equipment and storage batteries at the Tenpaku Post Office (Nagoya-shi, Aichi) in the fall of 2023 or later to conduct a trial on using renewable energy and optimizing energy use.

Further developments will be discussed following the results of the trial.

Please see the attachment for an overview of the trial.

Trial overview

1 Location

Tenpaku Post Office (Aichi) 5-201 Shimada, Tenpaku-ku, Nagoya-shi, Aichi, 468-8799

2 Details

Solar panels and storage batteries will be installed at the post office to promote the initiatives (1) to (3) below. Trials will be conducted to determine operational issues and improvements on convenience, and further development will be considered in the future.

1 Install solar panels

  • Generate a portion of the electricity used in the post office, contribute to CO2 reductions and reduction of electricity use at peak hours

2 Install storage batteries

  • Optimize energy use by shifting peak usage from peak hours
  • Use storage batteries for demand response (Note 1) and contribute to the spread of renewable energy

3 Contribute to building communities that are disaster resilient

  • Use solar panels and storage batteries during outages to strengthen disaster resilience (Note 2)

(Note 1) Demand response (DR) is a change in electricity demand patterns of consumers (recipients of electricity service) using their energy resources to better match market needs. In this case, the Tenpaku Post Office will use the storage battery to change their power consumption.

(Note 2) Disaster resilience is the ability to respond flexibly to various incidents that occur in a disaster.

3 Date
