July 2021 Regular Press Conference : President Hayashi's Message

July 30, 2021
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

  • I will be discussing the following matters today:
  • New healthcare sector initiatives

New healthcare sector initiatives

  • The Chubu Electric Power Group is striving to resolve diverse societal challenges through the provision of environmentally-friendly, safe, inexpensive, and reliable energy as well as community support infrastructure delivering packages of services that enrich and make life more convenient.
  • In addition to the challenges of an aging and declining population, COVID-19 has brought to the forefront a variety of healthcare sector needs that we must address. It is against such background that we have strengthened our ties with medical institutions and other healthcare sector organizations.
  • In June 2020, we established a joint research program for community-based integrated care with Fujita Health University so as to assist people in appropriately managing and utilizing their own health data and sustaining a healthy lifestyle with peace of mind.
  • This joint research program has worked to construct a framework that enables community residents to receive thorough medical and nursing care services in the community where they have always lived as well as to develop new services. Last month, jointly with Fujita Health University, we established Genonics Ltd. to offer genetic testing services as part of our efforts to effectively prevent disease and proactively promote health.
  • Today, through the conclusion of a basic agreement with Fujita Academy, the parent organization of Fujita Health University, and Toyoake City which will jointly implement the program, we launched a new initiative, a pilot project for a prevention and improvement program utilizing electricity data and AI-driven frailty detection technology that we have been working to develop.
  • Frailty refers to a state in which declines are seen in physical and cognitive function midway between a healthy individual and one requiring nursing care. With appropriate care, progression to the point of requiring nursing care can be delayed and a healthy state restored.
  • In accordance with the basic agreement concluded today, Toyoake City, Fujita Academy, and Chubu Electric Power will launch a pilot project beginning in the second half of FY2021 that focuses on individuals aged 65 and above residing in Toyakae City.
  • Specifically, this program will leverage AI to detect individuals likely to be showing signs of frailty based upon electricity and water usage as well as other data obtained from sensors and smart electricity meters installed in each household.
  • Moreover, each individual will be provided with advice tailored to his or her condition. We will continue to evaluate the program’s feasibility so as to construct a system enabling community nursing care and welfare professionals to offer appropriate prevention and improvement programs.
  • Through this initiative, Chubu Electric Power along with Toyoake City and Fujita Academy aim to build a comprehensive framework, one not limited to the detection of frailty, but also integrating lifestyle improvements after detection along with recovery support and preventive measures as well.
  • The Chubu Electric Power Group will take up the challenge of confronting diverse issues faced by communities in addition to those in the healthcare sector presented here today. We will endeavor to provide solutions in collaboration with a variety of partners so that we may contribute to the sustainable development of communities and realize a safe and secure lifestyle that is enriching for our customers.
