September 2024 Regular Press Conference : President Hayashi's Message

September 24, 2024
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

First, I would like to say a few words about Typhoon No. 10 last month.

To all those affected by Typhoon No. 10, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences.

Affected by Typhoon No. 10, on August 31, more than 18,000 customers in some areas of Shizuoka Prefecture in the Chubu area lost power for up to 101 minutes, causing great inconvenience to a total of about 46,000 customers.

Chubu Electric Power Group will continue to work with the national government and local governments to ensure early recovery in the event of a disaster.

I will be discussing the following matters today:

  • Electricity Supply and Demand and Disaster Response this Summer
  • Techno Fair 2024

Electricity Supply and Demand and Disaster Response this Summer

  • Let me begin by explaining our response to this summer's power supply and demand and disasters.
  • During this summer, we were able to secure the reserve ratio of 3%, which is the minimum required for a stable supply of electricity, and deliver electricity in a strict but stable manner, by ensuring the operation and maintenance of power generation facilities and securing the necessary supply capacity through the provision of electricity from other general transmission and distribution utilities.
  • We would like to take this opportunity to thank our residential and business customers in the Chubu area for their cooperation in the efficient energy use within a reasonable range.
  • This summer marked the hottest on record, with the average temperature in Nagoya in July reaching a record high.
  • In terms of electricity supply and demand, the electricity demand in the Chubu area reached 25.21 million kW after 2 p.m. on August 5, influenced by the high temperature rising to 39°C, the maximum demand at a single point this summer.
  • Additionally, at 4:30 p.m. on September 18, the wide-area reserve ratio reached 5.20%, the smallest of this summer, mainly due to higher-than-expected temperatures across the country and increased electricity demand.
  • The Group will continue to take all possible measures to ensure a stable supply of electricity by ensuring the operation and maintenance of power plants, transmission and substation facilities, frequency conversion stations, and other facilities to prevent any reduction in supply capacity due to equipment trouble, and by providing customers with services that enable them to use electricity efficiently.
  • Next, I would like to talk about the actions taken in response to the Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information as our disaster countermeasures.
  • The first-ever alert over risk of Nankai Trough megaquake was issued following the August 8 earthquake centered in the Hyuganada Sea.
  • We immediately issued a standby arrangement for earthquakes, informed our employees and their families to ensure their safety, reconfirmed our countermeasure personnel and stockpiles of supplies and equipment, and established a communication system with local governments and other external parties.
  • At the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station, an initial response force of approximately 300 people, including standby personnel, patrolled the facilities and conducted inspections, followed by a standby force of approximately 30 people in preparation for the occurrence of an earthquake.
  • The response to the issuance of the Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information was the first experience for all employees, but we believe that we were able to respond without major confusion in accordance with the rules we had established in advance.
  • The Group will continue its efforts to ensure the stable delivery of electricity to customers through daily deepening of both hardware and software countermeasures and constant efforts to prepare for natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons.

Techno Fair 2024

  • Chubu Electric Power holds the Techno Fair every year for the purpose of introducing the Group's technological development efforts.
  • This year, under the theme "Towards Sustainable Future," the event will be held for two days on October 24 and 25 at the Research & Development Division located in Midori-ku, Nagoya.
  • The Research & Development Division is conducting research in seven priority fields necessary to realize Management Vision 2.0, with the aim of implementing innovative technologies in society, and we plan to introduce mainly the results of such research.
  • Today, I will introduce two of the research studies that will be highlights.
  • The first is "Development of small ammonia co-firing once-through boiler."
  • The small ammonia co-firing once-through boiler is designed to decarbonize the boilers in factories and other facilities that have been using mainly city gas as their main fuel. We have been engaged in basic research on co-firing of ammonia and city gas for two years with Miura Co., Ltd.
  • We have recently installed an ammonia combustion test facility on the premises of our Research & Development Division, and have begun combustion tests on an actual scale this month.
  • The three companies, including Chubu Electric Power Miraiz, will continue to study product specifications and other details with the aim of commercializing the product as soon as possible.
  • Through this development of decarbonization solutions for heat utilization processes in the industrial sector, we will support our customers' decarbonization efforts and thereby contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
  • The second is about "Sustainable cut flower cultivation through isolated culture."
  • While chemical pesticides are primarily used to prevent soil-borne diseases in the production of cut flowers such as lisianthus, we are researching "isolated culture" as a cultivation method to prevent diseases without relying on chemicals.
  • We are conducting the research in collaboration with the Nagano Vegetable and Ornamental Crops Experiment Station , JA-Kamiina, and other organizations, and in cultivation trials conducted last year, we were able to achieve a 30% reduction in disease damage.
  • Currently, further study of disease control measures as well as improvement of production quality using LED electric lighting are underway.
  • Since isolated culture is expected to reduce environmental impact by not using chemical pesticides, we will continue to collaborate with local farmers to contribute to sustainable agricultural production.
  • We believe that we can achieve great results by working together with many companies, local governments, and educational and research institutions. We hope that many of you will visit Techno Fair 2024 and feel free to talk to our exhibitors about the exhibits you are interested in.
