The Shizuoka City Waterworks and Sewerage Bureau (Municipal utility manager: Yasushi Morishita; "Shizuoka City") and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (President: Kingo Hayashi; "Chubu Electric Power"), today, concluded a basic agreement on a demonstration test for automatic water meter readings in mountainous regions using Chubu Electric Power’s smart meter communication network.

Japan's population is decreasing and aging. Information technology is advancing and customer needs are diversifying. In this environment, expectations are high that ICT and IoT technologies will reduce the amount of manpower required to read meters and lead to new services.

The usefulness of automatic meter reading using the smart meter communication network in apartments in residential districts has been confirmed in a demonstration test on automatic water and city gas meter readings at Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City (announced December 14, 2020).

The demonstration test announced today will aim to verify the usefulness of the smart meter communication network for a broader area by conducting the demonstration in mountainous regions where water indication reading work can be straining. We will also verify water use visualizations as part of discussions to introduce new added-value services through the use of water usage data.

Through this demonstration, Shizuoka City will continue to deepen its knowledge and expertise in automatic water meter readings in a broad area; Chubu Electric Power will continue to create new value using its smart meter communication network.
