Press Release
Agreement concluded on demonstration experiment for leak detection using smart water meters
December 16, 2025
Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.
Today, Chubu Electric Power signed an agreement with the Toyota City Waterworks and Sewer Department (hereinafter "Toyota City") and the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Toyota College (hereinafter "Toyota Kosen") regarding a demonstration experiment utilizing smart water meters for leak detection (hereinafter "this demonstration").
Toyota City faces the challenge of water level drops in its distribution reservoirs due to the time required to locate leaks within homes in small-scale water supply areas, such as mountainous and rural regions.
This demonstration aims to detect anomalies such as water leaks within homes at an early stage and enable prompt on-site response. Water usage data obtained from smart water meters is transmitted via our smart electricity meter communication network and linked to a leak detection program developed by Toyota Kosen for analysis.
In the future, the three parties will establish a system for determining water leakage and prevent water level drops in distribution reservoirs as early as possible through prompt on-site response by Toyota City, aiming to solve problems in administrative services such as operational efficiency, as well as to improve convenience for water users.
1. Demonstration Period
December 16, 2025 - March 31, 2027
2. Demonstration Site
Water distribution area of Shimonakagiri, Asahi District, Toyota City (95 properties)
3. Demonstration Objectives
- Verification of the feasibility of early detection of water leaks within households through AI analysis of water usage data from smart water meters
- Verification of the impact on the entire water supply area in the event of a water leak within a household (e.g., potential for large-scale water outages)
