Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant: Melted Remains of a Smartphone Charging Stand Found in the 3rd-Floor Office Area of Our Company's Office (Fire)

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on May 15, 2026, a company employee working in the office area on the 3rd floor of our office building within the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant detected an unusual odor. Upon inspecting the surrounding area, the employee confirmed that there were burn marks on a smartphone charging stand. No flames or smoke were observed, and the fire alarm did not activate.
The charging stand was promptly unplugged from the outlet, and the unusual odor subsided. Furthermore, no smartphone was charging at the time.
Regarding this incident, at 11:48 a.m. today, May 18, our company determined it to be a fire. As this falls under the reporting criteria of "when a fire or other disaster occurs within the power plant premises" as stipulated in the safety agreement (Note 1) with the municipalities surrounding the power plant, we are issuing this notice.
Additionally, we notified the fire department at 11:53 a.m. on the same day, and following an on-site inspection, the fire department also determined it to be a fire.
This incident does not involve any external radiation impact, and there were no injuries.
We will conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances and causes of the incident and take appropriate action.
We deeply apologize for any inconvenience or concern this may have caused the community. We also apologize again for the delay in notifying you, as it took some time to determine that a fire had occurred after the incident was discovered.

(Note 1) This refers to the Agreement on Ensuring the Safety of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station concluded between Shizuoka Prefecture, Omaezaki City, Makinohara City, Kakegawa City, and Kikugawa City and our company, as well as the Agreement on Ensuring the Safety of Municipalities Surrounding the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station concluded between Shizuoka Prefecture, Shimada City, Iwata City, Yaizu City, Fujieda City, Fukuroi City, Yoshida Town, and Mori Town and our company.
