Today, the Nagoya City Waterworks & Sewerage Bureau and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (“Chubu Electric Power”) began a trial introduction of automatic water consumption meter reading using smart water meters at a housing complex (124 units) in Nagoya City (“this initiative”), based on the “agreement regarding the trial introduction of automatic water consumption meter readings using smart water meters” that was concluded on March 26, 2020.

For this initiative, the smart meter communications network will be used to verify that water consumption data can be acquired in a stable manner, and reviews regarding the use of the acquired water consumption data, such as the “visualization” of water consumption and the early detection of leaks, etc., will be conducted.
Furthermore, the findings obtained from this initiative will be used to conduct reviews for full-scale introduction of automatic water consumption meter reading using smart water meters in the future.

By building and operating infrastructure that uses advanced technologies, both parties will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

1. Test overview

Test location: 1 wing each of housing complexes in Kita Ward and Atsuta Ward
Test period: May 6, 2021~March 31, 2024

2. Automatic water consumption meter reading

Water consumption data will be remotely acquired on a periodic basis by replacing the water meters of the housing complex with smart water meters, and using the smart meter communications network owned by Chubu Electric.

3. Examples of water consumption data usage (early detection of leaks)

Normally, water consumption will be zero during the night, or when the residents are away; however, if there is a leak, there will constantly be a certain amount of water consumption. By acquiring water consumption data on a periodic basis, it will be possible to detect leaks early.
