As a hybrid dam initiative starting in the 2024 outflow period, the Tokuyama Dam, managed by the Japan Water Agency, and the downstream Yokoyama Dam, managed by the Chubu Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, worked together for the first time (Note 1) to conduct a trial operation for enhanced water level operation that contributes to power generation.
The trial operation, which was conducted for the first time from June 24 to 26, 2024, after the outflow of water on June 22 to 23, allowed for the effective use of approximately 2.75 million m3 of water stored in flood control capacity for hydropower generation, compared to the normal operation of the Tokuyama Dam, resulting in a total increase of approximately 1,581 MWh of electricity generated by Chubu Electric Power's hydropower station at the Tokuyama Dam and the downstream Yokoyama Dam. This is equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by approximately 6,080 households (Note 2) in a month.
The three parties will continue to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society through the effective use of limited water resources.
(Note) The results are preliminary and may be subject to change due to further scrutiny.
(Note 1) The Yokoyama Dam has been involved in trials of enhanced water level operation that contributes to power generation since the 2022 outflow period, and this time, it conducted the trial for the first time with the upstream Tokuyama Dam in cooperation that contributes to power generation.
(Note 2) Estimated monthly electricity consumption of an average household is 260 kWh.
- Trial of enhanced water level operation that contributes to power generation
It is an initiative to store water in the dam reservoir to the extent that it does not interfere with flood response after flood control or in the event of outflows that do not lead to flooding, utilizing the latest weather forecasting technology, and to release the water for effective power generation at the adjacent power station of Chubu Electric Power.
