Press Release
Conclusion of Agreement to Process MOX Fuel in Britain for Pluthermal Energy at Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Reactor No. 4
May 13, 2010
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.
This is to announce that Chubu Electric Power has concluded with Global Nuclear Fuel-Japan Co., Ltd. (GNF-J) an agreement for the processing of MOX fuel from all plutonium recovered in Britain (MOX fuel processing agreement).
Hereafter, as soon as preparations are complete, Chubu Electric Power plans to conduct MOX fuel processing as based on this agreement at the Sellafield MOX Plant (SMP) in Sellafield, England, owned by the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), which will do the work under contract to GNF-J.
Also today, as announced by 10 electric power companies, an agreement was reached between those companies and NDA on a general framework to conduct MOX fuel processing at SMP, and it is based on this framework that the MOX fuel processing agreement was concluded.
Chubu Electric Power previously concluded an agreement for MOX fuel processing in France with GNF-J in March 2006, and we received the first MOX fuel from this arrangement at Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Reactor No. 4 in May 2009.
