Press Release

Extension of the Shutdown of Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Reactor No. 5

May 27, 2010
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

This is to announce that Chubu Electric Power has decided to extend the scheduled shutdown period of Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Reactor No. 5 (boiling water reactor, rated electric output 1,267 MW), which is presently under periodic inspection, from late-May this year to the end of July.

We are presently carrying out our fourth periodic inspection of Reactor No. 5. At the same time, we are making an effort to provide local residents with a clear explanation of the reasons why larger tremors were recorded at Reactor No. 5 as compared to other reactors during the Suruga Bay earthquake of August 11, 2009.

Meanwhile, we are also continuing with our analysis of the impacts of the Suruga Bay earthquake. From the perspective of improving analysis precision, as proposed by a member of the government Working Group*, we are making an ongoing analysis of seismological data and survey data of the characteristics of underground geological structures.

The extension of the shutdown period of Reactor No. 5 was judged necessary not only to complete the above analysis, but to also report the results to the government Working Group and to provide a proper explanation to local residents before resuming operations.

We will continue to place priority on ensuring safety at Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station as we aim to win the trust and confidence of the local communities.

* The government Working Group refers to the Joint Working Group for Earthquake, Tsunami, Geology, and Foundation under the Seismic and Structural Design Subcommittee, Nuclear and Industrial Safety Subcommittee, Advisory Committee for Natural Resources and Energy.
