Chubu Electric Power to End Manufacture and Sale of Artificial Zeolite

September 26, 2011
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

This is to announce that Chubu Electric Power decided today to end its manufacture and sale of artificial zeolite, which is sold under the product name Circulash. The company started the business in June 2003 (announced in a press release on June 17, 2003).

Artificial zeolite is a fine gray powder produced by chemically processing coal ash. It is used as an alternative to activated carbon and natural zeolite to adsorb foul-smelling gases, purify water and amend soil, among other uses.

Chubu Electric Power started manufacturing and selling artificial zeolite primarily made of coal ash as a way to effectively use coal ash discharged from the Hekinan Thermal Power Station. However, sales volumes have been slow to grow and there is not a strong outlook for better profitability in the future. Additionally, the suspension of operations at all our Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station reactors is expected to worsen company performance hereafter. Chubu Electric therefore decided to end artificial zeolite manufacturing and sales to help make our business more efficient.

Going forward, we plan to end manufacturing of Circulash in September 2013 and halt sales as soon as inventory is depleted.

We appreciate our customers and all concerned for their patronage and cooperation since the start of this business.

Although we will end the artificial zeolite business, the Chubu Electric Power Group will continue to work to meet our customers' broad range of needs.
