Starting Date of Commercial Operation of Joetsu Thermal Power Station Unit 1-1

June 29, 2012
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

Chubu Electric Power began construction on the Joetsu Thermal Power Station in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture in March 2007, and work has proceeded smoothly since then.

This is to announce that Unit 1-1, the first unit at the power station, is now scheduled to begin commercial operation on July 01.

Once all four units (1-1 - 2-2) have begun operation, total output of the power station will be 2,380 MW (595 MW × 4 units).

The power station uses state-of-the-art multi-shaft combined-cycle power generation*1 with LNG (liquefied natural gas) as fuel and will achieve thermal efficiency*2 of greater than 58%, the highest level in Japan.

Based on this, we estimate that when all four units (1-1 - 2-2) have begun operation, CO2 emissions will be reduced by about 1.6 million tons annually.

The start of commercial operation of the power station will also help to stabilize electric power supply in the Nagano area in the northern end of our service area.

Construction continues on Units 1-2 - 2-2, which are scheduled to start commercial operation in sequence by May 2014.

*1 In multi-shaft combined-cycle power generation, the gas turbines and steam turbine each turn their own generators, with multiple shafts comprising one block. Although this is Chubu Electric Power's first time to use this arrangement, it has previously been used numerous times in Japan.

*2 Thermal efficiency: The percentage of thermal energy of an input fuel that actually converts to electricity.

Characteristics

First thermal power station outside our service area

This is Chubu Electric Power's first thermal power station located on the Sea of Japan side of the country, outside our service area.

Power generation facility with high efficiency and low environmental burden

The power station will achieve thermal efficiency of at least 58%, the highest level in Japan, thanks to the multi-shaft combined-cycle power generation technology using 1,300°C class improved gas turbines.

This will allow us to use limited energy resources more effectively while reducing CO2 emissions.

In addition, the use of clean LNG as fuel eliminates soot.

High degree of automation

The facility is built to be controlled and monitored, from startup to shutdown, by a small number of workers in a central control room.
