Partial Revision of Work to be Performed for Enhanced Safety Measures related to Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station

In February, 2014, Chubu Electric Power filed an application for review of compliance with new regulatory requirements regarding Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Unit 4. So far, there have been a total of 11 review meetings conducted by the Nuclear Regulation Authority. Chubu Electric Power has gained appropriate findings of the work needed to be performed by the preceding examinations on power plants of other companies, and is currently deliberating those findings to be reflected in the enhanced safety measures.

This is a notification that Chubu Electric Power has decided to review the work to be performed (Note) for a portion of the construction for Unit 4 measures based on the results of studies thus far.

Through this review, we will mainly aim to strengthen the countermeasures geared to improving site response capabilities during severe accidents, etc.

Enhancement of functions of emergency response center

・Emergency power-supply equipment / ventilating equipment: Placed at diverse locations considering the impact of fires
・Air conditioning function: Enhancements for improving the work environment of disaster response personnel
・Building:Expansion of the building area associated with the measures listed above

Ensuring storage areas / access routes of portable equipment

・Portable equipment (power / water injection) storage location : Placed in areas with little impact from fires
・Portable equipment fuel tanks:Another tank installed underground, where they are free from the impact of tornados and fires
・Access route:Revising routes in order to improve the accessibility during an emergency

Fire resistance measures

・Fire extinguishing system: Introduction of a fire extinguishing system capable of automatic or remote operation
・Fire extinguishing method: Adoption of a more appropriate fire extinguishing method depending on the type of fire (foam, gas filling, etc.)

As a review of design, site preparation, building construction, and manufacturing / installation of equipment will be necessary in the future from the review of this work to be performed, the completion of the enhanced safety measures planned for September, 2015 for Unit 4 and September, 2016 for Unit 3 is expected to take approximately one additional year. This will result in an expected completion date of September, 2016 for Unit 4 and September, 2017 for Unit 3.

There is the possibility that a construction review and additional construction may be carried out along with the progress of the review of Unit 4. However, we will continue to strive for early completion by accurately grasping the review situation and latest knowledge to take necessary measures in ahead of time.

Chubu Electric Power is committed to continuing to make steady progress with measures for further enhancement of the safety of Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station. At the same time, we will also strive to provide detailed explanations of the content of those measures to gain the understanding of the local community, and of society at large.
