4 Project background
Along with recent economic development, the electric power demand in Myanmar is expected to increase from approximately 2,000MW in 2012 to approximately 4,800MW by 2020. However, Myanmar's stable supply of power has been greatly impacted by implementation of planned power outages due to capacity shortage and aging of power generation facilities, and by frequent occurrence of failure accidents caused by aging power transmission and distribution facilities. For this reason, improvement of power distribution facilities, as well as improvement of power generation facilities and transmission and transformer facilities, is urgent for this country.
