Supply- and Demand-side Measures for Summer 2011

June 28, 2011
Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.

Chubu Electric Power has continued to review additional supply-side and demand-side measures in relation to electric power.  Here we announce the measures that have been decided on as a result of these reviews.

On the supply side, we have decided to make further changes to the periods for periodic inspections of our thermal power facilities and to further reduce the inspection procedures, in addition to purchasing power from other businesses. These measures will make it possible to secure a maximum of 430 MW in additional supply capacity.

On the demand side, we predict that the cooperation of our customers in increasing their level of power generation using home generator equipment and of our corporate customers in expanding planned adjustment contracts, among other measures, will reduce peak load by around 150 MW against figures in our Power Supply Plan.

We expect, by means of these measures, to increase our reserve margin for supply by month for this summer by around 1% against the previously announced (May 23) level of around 5%, to 6-7%. However, this still does not meet the adequate reserve margin of 8-10% that is the usual criterion for stable supply.

In addition to our reserve margin for supply by month, we are today also publishing our reserve margin for supply by week. The reason for this is that, having reflected the special adjustments made by our customers in their production processes and operations, etc. in our calculations, it was judged more appropriate to offer our customers detailed information concerning our power supply and demand projections.

Our deepest thanks to all our customers who have generously cooperated in conserving energy.

Power demand peaks during the daytime on summer weekdays. This summer, despite the implementation of a variety of measures on the supply and the demand sides, we predict that power supply and demand conditions will continue to be severe from 13:00 to 16:00 Monday to Wednesday.

At Chubu Electric Power we are taking all measures possible to ensure stable supply, including steadily implementing priority inspection and maintenance operations for our generating facilities and the related transmission and conversion equipment.

We are sincerely sorry to cause any trouble to our customers, but we are requesting them to continue to cooperate in energy-saving efforts between 13:00 and 16:00 from Monday to Wednesday this summer.

We predict that power supply and demand conditions will be particularly severe between 13:00 and 16:00 from Monday to Wednesday in weeks* in which we expect our reserve margin to fall below the adequate reserve margin, and we are therefore repeating our requests to our customers to implement exceptional energy-saving measures.

* July: Week 3 (6.7%); Week 4 (5.8%); August: Week 4 (6.7%); Week 5 (6.8%); September: Week 2 (6.4%)    Figures in parentheses show the reserve margin for power supply
